This includes the famously ambitious multiplayer and a new playable character in the form of the Arbiter. Originally thought of as a small side project by Bungie that merely supported the story of Halo 3, ODST eventually grew to become a full-fledged game that is able to stand tall among its brethren Halo titles. Playing as a lone ODST roaming the ruins of New Mombasa was an incredibly engrossing experience that no one saw coming.
The quiet streets in the dead of night, the jazz overtones courtesy of Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori, and the unique plot progression make ODST a darling jewel in the collection of Halo games we've played. Halo 3 concludes the story started by the original Halo, before the later events of the Reclaimer Saga. Due to being the grand finale of a trilogy, the game was designed to be bigger and better than what came before.
Master Chief must deal with the entirety of the Covenant under the Prophet of Truth and eradicate the Flood from the face of the universe, all while trying to rescue his AI companion, Cortana. Many gameplay additions were presented to players, including the Forge Map Editor, which allowed you to modify multiplayer maps. Halo: Spartan Assault is a twin-stick shooter that originally came out for mobile platforms.
When it comes to placing Halo games in order, this one sits roughly between the events of Halo 3 and 4. It gives players the chance to control Spartan Sarah Palmer as she fights against the Covenant.
Even though the game released after Halo 4, lore-wise, its events occur before. Palmer is an interesting character in the Halo universe, and it's nifty to be able to experience a part of her story.
Although the game had fairly mixed reviews, it garnered enough attention to eventually create a sequel.
Halo 4 is the first game in the Reclaimer Saga and is also the first mainline Halo title to be solely created by Industries. The story picks up four years after the events of Halo 3.
Master Chief and Cortana are pitted against the Forerunner known as the Didact, as well as a splinter faction of the Covenant. The threat of the Didact pales in comparison to the tragedy of Cortana's onset of AI rampancy. As she and the Chief struggle to undo the Didact's plans, they have to contend with her deteriorating condition. Halo 4 put extra focus on the relationship between Master Chief and Cortana throughout the campaign, and the multiplayer underwent massive changes as well, incorporating loadouts as an integral part of the experience.
This game technically takes place during two time periods: partially during Halo 2 and partially during events after Halo 4.
The game primarily focuses on the player hunting down an artifact called the Conduit. This artifact was first located in the ruins of New Mombasa, but it got transported to a Halo ring. The struggle to obtain it is the main objective of the narrative. Narrative takes a back seat to gameplay in this arcade-style title.
Halo: Combat Evolved is where it all began for Halo players as the first game to be released for the series. Story-wise, it takes place straight after Halo: Reach ends.
We meet the iconic Master Chief here and follow his mission to fight against Covenant forces and the Flood as he makes his way across the Halo ring. Ask a bunch of Halo fans what the best game in the series is and you will no doubt hear Halo 2 said a fair bit. It is well-deserved praise as this really is a stellar game that still holds up now. Here you play as a member of the ODST and despite still very much being a Halo game, the setting and style felt different and it ended up being one of the most compelling games in the series — not bad for a title that was never meant to be AAA.
The original trilogy of Master Chief-focused games came to an epic close with Halo 3. You play as Spartan Sarah Palmer in this game that was originally designed for mobile and, based on what we can tell, it takes place after Halo 3 but before we move onto the Halo 4 story.
The relationship between Master Chief and Cortana is at the forefront of the story here as the pair go up against the Forerunner known as the Didact, and they also have a rogue faction of the Covenant causing them problems. This is a bit of a tricky one to place as the Spartan sequel takes place not only while the events of Halo 4 are taking place, but some is also set around the time of Halo 2.
Here makes the most sense to play it as the Halo 4 content would confuse you if you saw it that early, but be wary of a bit of time jumping! Cortana has been taken again, but there is much more to her story than just a simple kidnapping in Halo 5: Guardians. Desperate to find his friend, Master Chief goes rogue and his quest to hunt Cortana down, and fight off many enemies, is made tougher thanks to him being pursued by Spartan Locke and his team.
This is another game that is not exactly essential for getting the full Halo story, but it has enough elements to make it enjoyable and there are some nice teases there for what to expect when the Halo Infinite story gets going.
This brings us right up to the present with the about-to-be-released Halo Infinite! Blimey, that Master Chief has been busy. Players get to control Sarah Palmer, a major character of the Reclaimer saga that appears in Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians. The game was also released on mobile, and despite its mixed reviews on launch, it still got a sequel.
Released in as Industries' first original Halo game, Halo 4 is set in and it explores the relationship between Master Chief and Cortana. The game also makes an effort to delve deeper into the lore behind the Forerunners, one of the factions within the Halo universe, with a focus on the Librarian.
As mentioned above, Halo: Spartan Strike is technically set in two different time periods. If trying to replay the full saga, it would be beneficial to play the first part of Halo: Spartan Strike after Halo 2 and come back to part two after finishing Halo 4. The second part of the game is set in and Halo 5: Guardians is set in , eight months after the events of Halo 4 , and it also features two protagonists: Spartan Locke and Master Chief.
The former is trying to hunt down the latter, who went rogue to find Cortana, who is finally revealed to be an antagonist in the game and sets the events up for Halo Infinite.
A sequel to Halo Wars , Halo Wars 2 is set in , after 28 years since the events of the previous game and shortly after what happens in Halo 5: Guardians.
The game follows the crew of the Spirit of Fire from the first Halo Wars , and the story revolves around a Forerunner installation called the Ark, capable of creating more Halo rings.
Lastly, Halo Infinite is going to be set in , and it will take place after both Halo Wars 2 and Halo 5. Master Chief will fight alongside a new AI, likely setting up a confrontation with Cortana after what happened in Halo 5.
Unfortunately, Halo Infinite spoilers are currently all over the internet due to Industries accidentally sharing campaign files during their technical preview build.
