Common types are full-double phase, full-single phase, and half step. To make a stepper motor rotate, you must constantly turn on and off the coils. If you simply energize one coil the motor will just jump to that position and stay there resisting change. This energized coil pulls full current even though the motor is not turning. The stepper motor will generate a lot of heat at standstill. The ability to stay put at one position rigidly is often an advantage of stepper motors.
The torque at standstill is called the holding torque. Because steppers can be controlled by turning coils on and off, they are easy to control using digital circuitry and microcontroller chips. The controller simply energizes the coils in a certain pattern and the motor will move accordingly. Where a motor includes a continuous rotation DC motor and combined controller circuit, stepper motors utilizes multiple notched electromagnets arranged around a central equipment to describe the position.
Stepper motor needs an exterior control circuit to separately energize each electromagnet and make the motor shaft ON. Bipolar motors are the most solid type of motor and generally have 4 or 8 leads. They have two arrays of electromagnetic coils inside, and stepping is attained by altering the current direction in the coils.
Unipolar motors are recognizable by having 5 wires, 6 wires or even 8 wires, also have 2-coils, but each one has a center tap. These motors can step without having to opposite direction of current in the coils, making the electronics simpler. But, because this tap is used to strengthen only half of each coil at a time they normally have less torque than bipolar.

Stepper motors, while still powered by DC current, do not use the brushes and mechanical commutators found in typical DC motors. Instead, they are a type of brushless DC motor where their stator contains many evenly spaced windings of wire that act as magnetic poles when powered, and their rotor is composed of permanent magnet pairs in a gear shape.
An electronic motor controller switches the current to each successive stator coil to magnetically lead the rotor from one pole to the next. Because the rotor moves from one pole to the next, the position of a stepper motor can be determined at all times, with no correction needed. While not truly continuous motors, stepper motors offer exact positioning when paired with a stepper controller.
Stepper motors can also provide holding torque positive torque value at zero speed , which is great for robotics and other positioning applications.
These machines, while generally less efficient than a common DC motor, provides excellent repeatable movement that is both reversible and highly controllable.
