I loved Target and the stories of kids in Delhi.. I remember every time my dad bought us a Target how my sister and me would bug him to move to Delhi so we could live those cool Vikram Delhi Public School lives I have the Target diary circa !
I guess I need to chuck it out at some point.. Bombay Also Maggi wrapper schemes were awesome. Once me and bro went to the shop with 17 wrappers. I was the only uncool kid in school. Irshad What a sad state of affairs! ALL of them, think hard. I was in the 3rd standard in boarding school and suddenly once after holidays every kid had those cool shoes with the velcro pocket in the side Some of them would actually stuff their pocket money, a grand Rs.
Of course, the shoes themselves started to get stolen by Irshad other kids I pestered my dad the next time to buy me the stuff, he refused. I even asked all the firang uncles and aunts if they could send me those, needless to say I didn't get them. I had to make do with my Corona canvas shoes. Forgot about the NAB Somehow, the school would never donate all of the money that the students contributed ever! Irshad I listed just things because the list wasn't bigger than that.
Some smart alecs attached paper and put more than items. Althought I'd give you a prize for creativity! BTW, an interesting tidbit - Mr.
Narang had an atrocious sense of dress that was a leftover from the gaudy 70s and loved saffron suits and green shirts. Narang was badly injured after a fight scene with Amitabh on the docks. So where do the amusement parks and the ads figure? Oh, that's how Mr. Narang sent code messages to Agent Orange - through the innocuous ads, to give him the exact location for delivery on the Amusement park grounds. The clowns in the ads mark the spot. Some say Mr. Narang is still alive today and has moved to the US, where he has patented his secret formula and they use it in Fanta.
IIRC, I was in 7th then, so that makes it or Varun some sidey Knowledge program. Ameya, that 'tonic' was Gripe Water. I am sure everyone who is posting on this thread has had it atleast once. It was a patent medicine for babie's tummyache or something, but all it was just an extract of the Gripe plant. What I remember is the Ad where 4 generations of women give the same advice to each other.
This is before Diamond comics brought the rights for Phantom. I still have abt Indrajaal comics bound safely with twine! Thanks for reminding me Chandamama, 'Chandoba' as it was for me. I had scanned one cover and used it as a desktop background for a long time. Dunno where that file is now. I had to spend a week at Mantralaya - torture. Having said that I was quite impressed, the so-called "bureaucracy" was actually quite alert.
I never had to wait for more than minutes to meet any secretary, and all correspondence between the PA and me Irshad happened quickly. But, the safari suits and pan chewing babus are really nauseating, not to mention the gold pen they keep in the top pocket! Varun Aasmaan se gira.. I was in 5th then, I guess. That "awesome" program on DD about the Indians in space and their adventures? Indradhanush truly stretched it, time travel Irshad through a video game? But we all bought it :D Sigma Do you remember that ad for some tea, was it lipton?
Anyone into Inspector Ghote? Varun delhi serials I used to travel with my mom all the time. Used to love going and buying the ticket. Ma used to give me the change and I remember reconfirming the destination times before actually mustering up the courage to say the same to the conductor. Ruchi Then, school days, when I needed to go somewhere.
I used to be so scared inspite of proper instructions on how to go anywhere. From opera house to Churchgate, Regal, chira bazaar, napeansea road Had bought a bus directory as well. Once, I took a to Regal only to realize that it went to Ballard Pier it comes back from Regal and then I got lost.
I was so scared!!! Some of my favourite bus routes are: 66, , 85, 92 ltd, double decker i miss , 83, 86, 28, oh god, the list will go on!! Maybe we should start another thread on buses. And of course its song"chaddi pahan ke phool khila Deepa hai". Bus Route No. Do YOU remember? Salil 6 What was the shape of the 3 paisa coin? Salil Answers The combination of Fork and spoon? Pooja Bedi? Hexagonal Vikram not bad, not bad Tarabai Hall was I think his stomping ground.
It was still there a year ago. My favourite snack there as a kid was a "maska bun" - a sweet bun with sultanas in it and topped with yellow Polson's Butter better tasting than the white Amul.
Kalaghoda - yes, it was Eddie the 7th. I sit corrected. Earliest double decker buses were there in the s if not earlier. The big innovation in the 70s was the articulated double decker, which couldn't handle the sharp turn at Portuguese Church in Girgaum and often toppled over. Another treat used to be "jelly custard" at Satkar on the corner of A Road all the Udipi dishes were also great. I really miss seeing the constant parade of street pedlars:.
I don't think any other city had such a range of goodies In the movie Angoor, with double roles of Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma, there is a song, which in the film was performed by Deepti Naval inside an auditorium.
Whenever I see that bit in the movie, I always get Deja Vu. Which audi is it? I am damn sure I have Varun been there for some Dandiya show hint: might be in a gujarati community but I can't seem to recollect where and when?
So please help me recollect the name and location of the hall. The one that burnt down? Ash: What is the ration rice walla? I know Vikram all the rest but I'm not quite sure what the rationricewalla did Kalhaiwala : thats wot we call in marathi.. I remeber this procedure used to create a lot of smoke of weird smell. Ashish Dombaris : The street circus ppl..
I never saw then recently.. Enlighten me. NOW you remember! Papa Shango didn't feature in the WWF cards though Yea I remember both of those, but didn't know they fought the first match televised on Prime sports.
Irshad Thanks salil, you've made everyone dig deep into their brains for some amazing long lost memories! Anyways, we friends used to update our card collection every month or so. Nowadays, I dont even update my supposedly-all-important lab notebook that often! There's a name from the past The pretty girl with the dimpled chin and frazzled hair Wonder what happened to her Cant believe what age does to people. Still, if you are curious, do a google Bombay image search. It was here that I started my love affair with ice-creams.
Never liked them before. My favourite one used to be the Tropical Paradise, I think. Simply heaven. And we should also not forget Vadilal. I've eaten my first kala-khatta ice-candy there. Was so yummy. Also the Croissants Etc craze which hit everyone at the same time. I remember, it used to be such a dating ground with us kids About the mail van thingie, we used to cross Ruchi our fingers and could uncross them only when we saw a black car.
Did anyone ever count the numbers on a bus ticket, find out the corresponding alphabets and figure out which person from the opposite sex of the name from that alphabet liked you?
In the novel scene, a couple of things which bring out some flavour of the city. Another one is Dangerlok, Eunice D'souza. Random Indian literature. I havent read the Busybee book as yet. Should pick it up soon Some of the best stories are those translated from marathi which talk about the mills - the disruptive powerloom and Datta Samant - and the shivsena movement through the 60s, how they managed to get all the left leaning mill workers to 'fight' for their rights. Phenomenal stuff, i preferred those stories to Rushdie and naipaul extracts Rushdie though is easily the best authority ever to have written about Mumbai.
Irshad Digressing, I think everyone should read 'Poisoned Bread', a collection of stories by dalit writers. Further digressing, having an office in what used to be a mill makes me realise what different worlds we live in. My life has begun to revolve around the 3 o clock shift, when the bhajiwalas and the lunch carts make a beeline for century mills and bombay dyeing, and all the workers squatting, drinking tea and having their bidis.
The mills and the mill workers to me are more symbolic of mumbai than totos, or bhutta at carters. Awesome stuff. They got all these authorities to talk to us, about how the city was and is, and mainly the history of settlements in this city.
Thus we had covered three main settlements. Thus the windows in the one room flats are high up with bars on them. Awesome learning there. Do you know if there is any course offered on Colonial era Bombay, i.
I am deeply interested in that era, maybe something to do with the buildings. Pea Jay Please let me know when, where the course is, if there is one, so I can plan my next visit to Bombay accordingly. Thanks wwf stuff We'd each choose our teams of wrestlers and could put on any of these avatars. I bullied him into taking all the bad guys. Aa Bail Mujhe Maar was indeed hilarious It's surprising Bombay how some of the beter programs recede into some members forgotten corner of your mind and other, less enjoyable programs stay clear and vivid!
Vikram And now the stupid song won't go out of my head!! Hey, that jail bit reminded me of Monopoly Old Times It had a gold wrapper with a pic of the particular dry-fruit it was supposed to taste Pea Jay like. Also, those dayz ppl weren't as glued to the Idiot Box as kids do today It's gonna be in my head all day now..
Mard Taangewaala, main hoon mard taangewaala Bombay Mujhe dushman kya marega, mera dost members Vikram ooperwaala.. Full disclosure: This was also my favourite movie at one point in my very very misguided childhood.. Can you or anyone recite the entire ad??? Btw u have a phenomenal memory for these things Richa..
Do you remember the complan ad? I am too old blah blah, too young to be a yadda yadda Damn, the days when ad agencies made ads not to win awards. Salil would agree I'm sure! Edit: They had these really corny ads in Amar chitra katha Or was that nestle?! Someone with a better memory.. I'm a Complan Boy! I'm a Complan Girl! Vikram For the record, I was a Boost Boy FYI, the Presidential debates are very interesting right now in my part of the world, yaar.
Cutting Chai at the Thela Rain in the train Worli Seaface in the night Velocity on the Friday night Girgaon Paresh Chaupati at Ganesh Visarjan Marine Drive in the evening And how no matter how many candies you bought, you could never find the Mauritania Flag. Aur woh pacchis paisey ka "sorat" jo local bhaniya ke paas milta tha. And did someone mention the firebrand lady Raj "Rajni"?
Or "Faster Feni"? Or the serial hosted by Kamleshwar on Thursdays. Anyone remember the name? And those annoying "Rukawat ke liye khed hain" signs on TV. When my mom used to wake us up, not because it was in the watch, but because she just heard the "Deccan Queen" pass by.
How we used to tell the barber, "Setting" style chahiye. Those long sideburns, and the hair completely covering the ears. Vikram, thank you so much sarcastic for replacing the Allah ke Bande song from my head with this 'Mard' song. FYI I was caught by my mom trying to carve 'Mard' on my chest with a kitchen knife!
HOw misguided is that! Milind, I am not talking about AA brother's Kajubarfi. They still have it though. Pea Jay 3. ANyways, my favorite scene in the ad was Father, Son and MOther-in-Law sitting at dinner table and staring at the flying utensils coming from the kitchen. I found the ad completely natural back then, but after some years, thinking of it starts giving me a laughing fit!
Well that was for Maggi and used to be on Chandamama. Pea Jay By the way, does anyone remember the fortnightly 'Champak'? All these years and they still publish it. Ram and Shyam and their Poppins adventures Irshad I do remember the Maggi contests, they were great fun! But I somehow never made it to the Maggi club, dunno why. Must've been the only shmuck who didnt!
The bastards took my goodies away and never replied a thing! The only one I remember is Sunil Gavaskar for Dinesh. Anyone else? The firang was so cute, angry and all. The Egypt ad was not so cute. I also remember Sridevi in the Seema tubelight ad wearing some blue thing with lots of frills, walking Ruchi down from stairs and dancing. Wearing lots of lipstick obv. I have the ring tones of Lifebuoy, Titan, Nescafe on my phone currently. And the jingle from the Bacardi Ad.
Nothing is as nice as finding paradise, and sipping on Bacardi Rum!! Talking of cell phones reminds me of how we had to do with the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited of old.
How we had to grease the hands of the Raj linesman, and their Diwali Bakshish. That probably still happens. And anyone remember LalitaJi, and her "Ravi Beta"? Surf ki kharid daari mein hi samajhdaari hain. I've got more to that if anyone's interested.. And I've got more to that, if anyone's interested. Batamya, that's priceless. Raj, definitely interested, please post the rest of the Bharat ek Khoj poem.
And I guess people dont use SMS coz of all the unlimited call times one gets. Better to leave a voice mail, rather than learn the ins and outs of shortcut keys and SMS abbreviations. And do not complain about me filling up the page.
Here goes "Bharat Ek Khoj". Srishtee se pehle saty nahin thaa, asaty bhi nahin tha Antariksh bhi nahin, aakaash bhi nahin tha chipaa thaa kyaa kahaan, kisne dekhaa tha us pal to agam, atal jal bhi kahaan tha Raj Shrishtee kaa kaun hain karta Kartaa hain yeh vaa akarta Oonche aasmaan mein rehtaa Sadaa adhyaksh banaa rehta Wohi sach much mein jaantaa, Yaa nahin bhi jaantaa Hain kisi ko nahin pataa, Nahin pataa. Woh tha hiranya garbh srishti se pehle vidyamaan Wohi to saare bhoot jaat ka swami mahaan Jo hai astitvamaan dharti aasmaan dhaaran kar Aise kis devta ki upasana kare hum avi dekar.
Garbh mein apne agni dhaaran kar paida kar Vyapa tha jal idhar udhar neeche upar Jagaa chuke vo ka ekameva pran bankar Aise kis devta ki upasana kare hum avi dekar. Srishti Nirmaata swarg rachayta purvaj rakhsa kar Satya dharma palak atul jal niyamak raksha kar Phaili hain dishayen bahu jaisi uski sab mein sab par Aisi hi devta ki upasana kare hum avi dekar Aisi hi devta ki upasana kare hum avi dekar amazing Thanks for the Bharat Ek Khoj title Actually, if you remember the very first Episode, the entire episode was in Verse Milind from the Rigveda I have been converting MP3s to ringtones and I have so many self created ones Milind Mira, I also have the Doordarshan signature tune..
Does anyone remember the title song for Chanakya? Also there was a patriotic song in one of the Chanakya episodes: Ham Kare Rashtra aaraadhan Ham kare raashtra aaraadhan. Apne haste shaishav se apne khilte yaovan se ham kare rashtra ka archan. Does anyone remember the complete verse?
Both of them are agnostic hymns, as opposed to the Purushasookta, but now the Hiranyagarbha Sookta is considered to be a prayer to the Sun. I disagree, but let's not digress. Someone spoke about the creation hymn. That is the Purushasookta RV It's highly controversial because it talks about the creation of the four castes. The sasnkrit version is here and the English translation, here.
The thing is, the Hiranyagarbha sookta in Bharat ek Khoj has been chanted exactly the same way as I was taught it, though in Hindi. The translator must have been some really smart guy. I take no credit for the English translations, and no responsibility for your actions after reading them. Do not flame me. Bombay Aye balike, twam katham kathisyasi members Aye balakah, aham kim kathisyamh Shrinvasi Shrunha Raj Kim twam khandaalaa agchasyasi Aham kim kurwasyami khandaalayeh gamisyami, bhramisyami, nryuthyami, gaayami, maja karishma, kim karishyami?
Ellos van a "Khandala". I cannot even crib. I have been warned it would be arbitrary and random Kya pakarai sablog!
Hell, I haven't seen anyone beg this badly even for OMkAr a gmail account! It's from the RV, dashama mandala. I never said it celebrated the caste system. But it uses a metaphor for the creation of the brahmins. Ya veena var dand mandit kara.. Ya shwet padmasana.. Doordarshan used to start at around 5 pm or so Used to start at like AM. I still remember that funny line from Mister Yogi.
PYT: "Thats your problem". I remember so many of them. Jeetendra was not kidding. These memory tablets do work [For those who remember that ad ]. And I remember the music of dada dadi ki kahaniya. That was the cutest thing ever! Sat why do i remember all this? How about the classic from Vikram aaur Vetaal: Vikram, bhag jaa Main tere Milind bas mein aane wala nahi hoon While browsing about in the local public library, I found treasure!!
Did I have a fun night out!!! And do you remember this? Didi, yeh anek kya hota hain? Anek, anek yaaney bahut saare Jaise Suraj ek, Chanda ek, Taare anek. Raj Didi, Taaron ko anek kyon kehte hain? Now how about "Ring-a-Ring O Roses"? Raj here you go Raj! And jogging back, Does Anyone remember the Pepsi Ad? The full one with Remo and Juhi "Are you ready for the magic? The other Pepsi one with Aamir, Mahima and of course, Sanju a. No one can forget that. Chaahe Mera Dil. Yeh Bechaara kaam ke bhoj kaa maara.
Isey chahiye Sinkara. The Lehar 7up Fido Dido. This one also made it to our College Toilet Graffiti. Bacchon, Yeh hain hamare daaton ki banawat. Raju, Tumhare daath thoy motiyon jaise chamak rahe hain? Aur Masterji, aapke daath? People seem to get nostalgic about a lot of things they weren't so crazy about the first time around. ECE bulb lana. On a mission to visit stange new worlds, to seek out new planets and new civilizations. Satz Headbangers Ball!! And then there were Nonie, and David Wu, and Alessandra.
Those were the days when MTV played only English tracks. Those were also the times, when every other VJ did not attempt to be funny. Just kept it simple. The good Raj old days when MTV was not indianized, and did not have Bollywood movie clips after every 2 minute song. And Indian pop did not mean plagiarized remixed songs. Typical Manglorean fare. Prawn Gassi, the Pomfret Curry. Been more than 5 years since I last went there. And missing Bade Miyan ke Egg Parathas and kababs, and the bun maska paav's and kheema Raj paav at Light of Iran, the rasam vadas at Cafe Madras, the solcurry's at the Malvani restaurants after a heavy meal.
Satz discovering smoker's corner at Fort really cheap books here. Anyone know Goa Bhavan? Great members food yaar, che, kya hai yaar! You go and ring the bell, and sit in the ghar ka table. There is a slightly bevda guy who comes and gives you water. Then the Uncle or the Aunty comes and gives you the food.
Nishant Reminded me of a superb Konkani place in Poona, near Deccan, it was on the first floor, similar to the Goa Bhavan joint. But nothing like Goa Bhavan, for the smell. Kya kar diya yaar! I think I wrote this on another thread. Edited - I wrote this one in early on this thread.
Doordarshan was the only channel then. Weekends, especially Sundays were when I used to watch stuff. His domination of the TV was between and a. Others I can recall include the morning cartoon slots of Tom and Jerry.
Summer vacations were spent watching the telly every morning to P. Don't recall the slots though Friday nights I think.
Every Sunday afternoon one regional film on DD. Ab Uska Pata De! Zara Mujhko Bata De! Mai Usse Miloonga! Ik Baar Mila De! Kaise Mil Gaya! Dildar Mil Gaya! Maine usse dhoond liya saara zamana! Hawa Hawa Ey Hawa Satz that was hilarious And does anyone remember that small home like restaurant, outside the Kalina Raj campus. We could not help licking our fingers.
Awesome food. Irshad The students won't be able to afford that though! I remember Busybee in The Evening News. Oh my God help complete please The 4th chapter in Balbharati had Nitin's father from Panaji, who was really cool for some reason. I dont even remember Jal, but kucch tho deep memory me kuch tho chalrai.
